Where are you spending your time in game? Pike: My interests in the game are very far-reaching and I enjoy most aspects of it -- hence the enthusiasm that I think seems to creep into most of my blog posts. I'm not purposefully trying to inject my blog with it. It just shows up. lotro goldI'm up for most tasks in the game, whether it's leveling, heroics, raiding or a Battleground or two. I'm not a big fan of Arena, but I'm game for basically everything else, and I'll greet it with gusto. Your blog, while still relatively fresh on the scene, gets props from all around the web. What prompted you to start blogging at Aspect of the Hare? A couple of things. Firstly, reading other blogs -- BigRedKitty and The Hunter's Mark were my two biggest influences. BRK and Lass were these bright shining beacons of hunterness to me as a then level 24 super-noob. For weeks, I never even commented on their sites; I figured I wasn't worthy. I certainly didn't see myself as worthy enough to start my own blog. But it got to the point where I was having more and more little ideas and babblings about the game in my head that I wanted to write down. My LiveJournal friends were the first unwitting victims of this, but before long, I realized that it would be better to dump my thoughts somewhere where no one would read them than at my LJ, where very few of my readers were WoW players. So I went to Blogger and made Aspect of the Hare. lotro gold I figured nobody would ever read my blog, ever. I was wrong -- but that's how things go, I suppose! What do you consider the thing that sets you apart from other Hunter blogs out there? Sometimes I think about my unique position as a Beast Master Hunter blogger who will be forever in the shadow of a particular Big Red Cat, yet it's never really bugged me at all. I do think the main thing that sets me apart from most other popular Hunter blogs out there is that I am largely about the pure enthusiasm I have for the Hunter class. I recently had a post where I stated that I didn't care if you raid or if you don't raid or if you PvP or what spec you are or even what level you are -- if you are playing a Hunter and having fun with it, then my blog is for you. lotro gold Aspect of the Hare is for people who want to celebrate our oddball love for our class without any of the negativity found on some of the bigger sites or forums. I'm really proud of the community that has sort of popped up based on that foundation. To a lesser extent, I also provide "Hunter Kindergarten" guides on my site. These are mostly guides that are aimed at newer Hunters or players and steer clear of too much theorycrafting in favor of an easy-to-read and conversational style. You've written about soloing Deadmines as a 30s-level Hunter in order to polish up skills. What's the most difficult encounter or endeavor you've undertaken with your own Hunter? One thing that comes to mind was soloing a really long group quest chain on Lunapike, my lovely Taureness (and my second Hunter to hit 70, though she's yet to reach 80). I wish I could remember the name of the quest for you to provide you with more specifics, but I know it involved going around and killing various elites around Outland. lotro gold These quests were all marked as three-player group quests, but I went and did it alone at level 68 or something. I have a distinct memory of taking a good long time killing this elite in the Tavern in Shattrath. I'd lay down a Freezing Trap, sic my kitty at the guy, pewpew, pull my cat back and thus pull the guy into the trap so I could bandage my cat ... And so it went, for probably four or five consecutive rotations like that. I used a similar strategy on another really hard-hitting elite in Nagrand. Mend Pet wasn't enough to keep your pet alive on these guys at the time, so you had to chain-trap on top of it so you could take bandage breaks. It was great. You sound as if you enjoy trying offbeat, new things just to see if you can do them. Yes. Trying to lower my personal high scores for soloing things and running to the other side of the world at level 10 to get rare pets is pretty standard for me, but it also seems to be pretty standard for a lot of Hunters ... We've got an adventurous streak in us. Tell us about your pet of choice -- who, what and why? Ah, don't make me choose! I do love the look of Wind Serpents. lotro goldI have the teal one out of Zul'Gurub; taming him alone as a non-SV hunter was quite an adventure, but that's another story. But asking me to choose a favorite? ... Can't do it, I fear. I love them all. What do you think is the best new change or direction for Hunters right now? I think the addition of pet talent trees was great. So are the upcoming dual-specs; we've all been at pet-unfriendly fights before, and since I'm typically a staunch Beast Master, I certainly wouldn't mind being able to temporarily switch to Marksmanship on said fights. What recent change for Hunters gives you the heebie-jeebies? The recent BM nerf hurt a bit, but on the other hand, I was never a BW/Readiness hunter to begin with (I'm stubborn), and the "un-nerf" was a nice little boost. In all honesty, I actually really miss Auto Shots and specials being linked, as they were pre-WotLK. Those who know me know that I pride myself on manually-weaving my shots, and having to mentally time those so as not to clip your Autos was really thrilling for me. But in the end, I can see why they changed it. We hear you have a lot of Hunter alts. What gives? I tell people that my two favorite things in the game are leveling and pets. Leveling is limited by the level cap, and pets are limited by five stable slots per Hunter. The answer to this dilemma, of course, is to level more Hunters. So I do. lotro goldI only have two non-Hunter characters that I play regularly, a Paladin and a Resto Druid. And seeing as the Paladin is super-new, I dunno if we can count him yet, really. Some players -- endgame raiders, for instance -- see pretty clearly the path they'll be taking in WoW in the weeks and months to come. What's ahead for Pike -- or is that a mystery? The big thing with me is that due to the nature of my job, I have no set schedule at all. I don't know what days and what times I will be working until a couple of days in advance. On any given day, I could be at work anywhere between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. This makes planning my "WoW life" very, very hard for me. I can't attend scheduled raids and I can't really plan ahead with anything. So I take each day as it comes. I log on, I see who needs me or what I feel like doing, and do it. It doesn't matter if I wind up in a heroic, a really good raid or running a level 14 hunter through the Barrens ... WotLK nominated for BAFTA, wins one out of three at AIAS World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King has been nominated for yet another award -- this time, Wrath has received a nod for Best Game of the Year by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Videogame awards. lotro gold UK residents can vote for the game right now over on their site, and a nice set of prizes, including a big TV, a Playstation 3, and copies of all ten nominated games going to one lucky voter. Voting is closed on March 9th, and the winners should be announced soon after that. And in case you've been wondering about the AIAS nominations we mentioned a little while ago, Blizzard is going about 33%. While they did win the award for best MMO game of the year (beating out Warhammer Online), Wrath of the Lich King lost its other two categories -- Left 4 Dead was awarded Best Computer Game, and Metal Gear Solid 4 won for Best Music over the Lich King's silky tones. Guess you can't win them all. But considering that the second expansion of a years-old MMO is still garnering honors, Blizzard has nothing to be ashamed of. Tips on completing Higher Learning Higher Learning is one of the most peaceful achievements in the game (all you have to do are read a few books that spawn around Dalaran), but it's no less desirable for that -- the achievement grants a miniature Arcane Elemental pet that looks awesome. lotro goldTeniblue over on WoW Ladies has a few good tips if you're trying to get all edumacated in Dalaran -- she's got links to two addons (including the perfectly-named Dalaran University) to use to help you track spawn times, and she's got a link to Breanni's great guide over on WarcraftPets.com (which our own Allison R. touched on briefly in a recent OverAchiever post). lotro gold What's fun about this achievement is that reading the books won't delete them, so it can be very social -- people have created #bookclub channels on many servers to keep track of when and where books are appearing in the city. That makes it a lot more fun than the, say, cooking daily quest that sends you after mushrooms in the sewers. It actually makes this social game, well, social. So next time you see a book sitting around the city, be sure to give a shout to the chat channel -- here's one in-game situation where everybody can benefit from a little extra chatting. lotro gold The official World of Warcraft community site has added a couple more galleries of the cool Wrath of the Lich King mounts for those of you who love a little eye candy now and then. You might recall that they posted a gallery of the Hog/Chopper mounts last week or so, and this week they've continued that trend with a gallery for Flying Carpets and a gallery for Proto-Drakes. Neither of these two galleries have anything nearly as cool as the two Tauren in silly hats and lumberjack shirts contained within the Motorcycle gallery, but there's still some neat pictures. The one above is one of my personal favorites. They're kissing or possibly trying to eat eachother! How sweet! I'm also a big fan of the flying carpet that's either shooting or absorbing purple lightning bolts. WoW, Casually: Top 5 casual improvements in 2008 Robin Torres writes WOW, Casually for the player with limited playtime. 2007 truly was the year of the casual, but 2008 continued the trend of Blizzard developers to make more content accessible for those of us with limited playtime. The biggest patches for us (and everyone else) were 2.4 and 3.0.2. And there was that little expansion that happened. Overall, there is more for us to do in less time. Here is my list of the top 5 WoW improvements for us this past year. lotro gold 5. Standardized Gear This didn't happen until the Echoes of Doom patch, like most of the items on this list. We are now able to use more gear that drops because many of the stats have combined. Spell Damage and Healing have combined into Spellpower making caster and healer gear very similar. Crit and Hit Ratings now affect both Melee and Spells, so a lot of gear can now be used for multiple specs. Raiders may complain that this means more classes fighting over instance drops, but more gear usable by more people is really only a good thing. lotro gold 4. Events Events got bigger and better this year which is always helpful for the casual player. We earned more experience and had more fun than ever before. The improvements of the Midsummer Fire Festival and Hallows End as well as the addition of the Scourge Invasion periodically made our gameplay more varied and more productive. I hope that the future brings even more of these holidays because they are my favorite part of the game. 3. Death Knights We didn't get this new class until Wrath of the Lich King, but it was worth the wait. Overpowered while leveling and easy to play, Death Knights have completely changed the game. Anyone with a level 55 of any class can make a DK on that realm (and in the future, on any realm) and everyone has. The leveling is fast and furious, making those of us with limited playtime able to see so much more of the game. lotro gold If you haven't made a DK, then you are one of the very few and you should find out what you are missing. 2. Achievements If you like collecting Achievements, there is always something for you to do. Bored on your Druid? Port over to Moonglade and love a bunch of critters. Only have a few minutes to play before dinner? Ride around a lower level zone until you've discovered the whole thing. Even if you don't go for Achievements, they have still made the game better for you. All of the old dungeons are regularly getting cleared these days just so that people can get their Achievements. This means that casuals are able to see previous endgame content that they missed out on -- without the 5 hour wipefests that the raiding guilds had to originally go through. Though Achievements did not get implemented until patch 3.0.2, it is hard to remember the game without them. lotro gold 1. Dailies Blizzard implemented some Daily Quests in 2007, but 2008 saw a real push to fill the game with Dailies. Starting in Patch 2.4, Fishing got added to the Outland Daily Quests and the Isle of Quel'Danas was one big goldearning Daily Quest-Fest. And now with Wrath we have even more to choose from: Crafting Dailies, PvP Dailies, Faction Dailies... I'm sure there are some I'm missing. They earn us recipes, experience, honor, faction and gold, gold, gold! You can afford even the most expensive mounts in just a few weeks with diligent daily questing. lotro goldSure, doing the same quests every day can get tedious, but now there are so many, you can vary them if you like. Being a casual at max level used to mean you had nothing to do but PvP, but now, if you can't get into the shorter instances or just don't want to group, you can still do your dailies and progress your character as far as professions, gold, faction, etc. Of course, every change that benefits the casual player benefits everyone, so we're not hoarding all of the fun for ourselves. Raiders are out there alongside us getting Achievements and doing their Dailies when not leveling Death Knights or saving reindeer. Fun game is fun. I predict more casual friendly content this year and all the years hereafter in our favorite MMO, which is hardly a risky prediction.
